The Number Won

I grew up across the street from a full service park that featured a recreation center. My exposure to sports and competition starts there. While most of my friends participated in sand lot football and basketball my play, from a team perspective, did not begin until junior high where I played football and ran track. I was a pretty good basketball player too as I made the junior-varsity team in high-school. I wasn't a superstar but I excelled at anything I attempted. In some ways I was uncomfortable in the limelight, content living in the background, as long as I felt useful and appreciated.

The Weekend of War

This weekend while conscious [that annoying time between naps] & flipping through the channels I happened upon three war movies; three time periods, three geographic locations, three campaigns. There is a common theme. What, asks the films, is the worth of a single human soul?

Sometimes a loss can be a win ...

Backseat Driver

Running on empty. It is late night and I am restless. Many of the weeks activities playing back in my mind, thinking about the things I accomplished but also the things I did not. I believed staying up until 2:30 in the AM and waking up at 6:30 was what I needed to maintain my life; taking care of the things I needed for myself early so that I had time to take care of the needs of others.

On Children.

Megan: “I felt better but now I don’t.”

Don: “Why?”

Megan: “Because who knows what you’re feeling. I don’t know what to say to her except I’d tell you to ask your father but he’s at the movies. I should’ve said ‘He’s just drunk.’”

Don: “You’re better with them. You don’t understand.”

Four Things I Would Write About …

I’ve found a formula to read more and will triple my reading goal for this year. Although I want to share my thoughts on everything I read I've realized that I am not interested in making something I find enjoyable an assignment. Reading is FUNdamental and is something to do with joy or it becomes a task like cutting grass. I don’t want to cut the grass. I’ve read and reviewed a few books here on the blog, some books I just read. There are some unfinished reads in my Kindle, in my car, on a table, on my dresser …

Memories There is a very small mark on the outside of my nose, noticed as a slight discoloration. On a scheduled weekend visit with ANT many years ago I reminded The TramueL Formerly Known As that I had never had chicken pox and argued against being around him as he was in full effect. She quickly pointed out the above mentioned mark as evidence of having had chicken pox as a child. I corrected her and explained that the mark was the result of riding down a very steep hill on the side of my face.

Peace.

I’m in love with silence. There are times when the sounds I love; music, my kids laughter, her voice … are too much for my ears. I Am not unhappy at those times however, with my will directed inwards I seek paths that allow me to get away from everyday “noise” at least some of the time. When I speak of noise I mean chaos, disorder and at times actual auditory noise. This is especially heightened now that my hearing has improved.

My Point of View

Last week I tweeted "Y'all still use Blackberry or nah?" in response to an advertisement for Blackberry Ten. Truly, I wasn't throwing shade ... I'm too Summer. A non follower and I exchanged a few pleasantries after which I explained I wasn't trying to clown her Blackberry usage. It reminded me of a tweetversation two years ago with a friend on Twitter, this is someone whom I know personally not just an avatar from a digital list.

Book: Caged, Memoirs of a Cage-Fighting Poet

Balance.

The life of a fighter, the life of a writer.

Cameron Conaway is a poet and for some time, a cage-fighting mixed-martial artist. His relationship with a demanding father provides the foundation for this inspiring memoir. Caged begins in Conaway’s childhood, where he describes an intolerant and at times verbally as well as physically abusive father. From the outset of the book, it is inevitable that his parents’ would divorce ...

Simplifying These Social Street

Because you care. Inspired by an unresolution, and an attempt to organize how I spend my time. I let go of Instagram, Tumblr and Posterous. The latter being the hardest because it was my introduction to blogging and their platform makes it very easy to do. Posting quotes there, images somewhere, music another place and books another instead of using one 'ring to rule them all.

Squarespace is my 'precious.

Greater Than the Sum of Its Parts

This article was written and posted on Dr. Kari Campbell Dot Com on May 15th 2012 before I was diagnosed with otosclerosis. I've recently completed an operation to treat the hearing loss, a stapedectomy, where my surgeon (otolaryngologist) bypassed a diseased bone in my middle ear with a prosthetic device that allows sound waves to be passed to the inner ear. I will provide a follow up article and discuss the outcome once I have recovered. ... because you care.
